Packing

Packing for Cornerstone can seem overwhelming if you don't have a plan or if you just need some tips. First things first, make sure you carry your tickets with you. Put them in your wallet, your purse, your glove box (if you are driving your vehicle), or some other safe place where you know you won't forget them. You don't want to drive 14 hours just to find out you left your tickets on the kitchen table. This also works for your money.

Clothing and toiletries are a big part of your packing. Rolling your clothes is a great way to save space. It works better than folding does and if you have space concerns this will allow you to put more in a smaller suitcase. There are showers on the grounds and sometimes you may be required to wait in line to use these facilities, so having a backpack to put your clothes and toiletries in is a good idea (we bring our own shower tent to avoid these issues). When packing the toiletries that you want for the week a good idea is to go into your bathroom and open the medicine cabinet, open the vanity, and open the shower curtain and take out everything that you want at once. This helps you prevent forgetting something like the shampoo because you didn't see it. Towels are another important part of packing. If you have room for 3 or 4, pack them. If you are going to go swiming in the lake you will want a seperate towel to use than the ones you'll use for taking showers. The lake is dirty (but perfectly safe) and will stain your clothes and your towel. The towel you use for taking showers will probably get dank by the middle of the week and you will appreciate having a clean one to use for the second half of the week.

Camping gear is next on the list and it is a good idea to get these things together a few weeks before you go so you know what you have and if you need anything else. If you have a tent put it together in the backyard before you go to make sure you have all the pieces needed and so you will know how to put it together once you're at your camp site. This will also give you a chance to check for damage and fix it before you're at Cornerstone with a tent that won't keep you dry. Look at your chairs, tables, lanterns, camp stoves, and grills to make sure everything is in good working order and if not you will have a chance to go get new ones or replacement parts. Don't forget the propane for your lanterns, stoves, and grills (they tend not to work when they run out). Flashlights are also good to have for going to the bathroom at night. If you can't find one in the middle of the night just grab your cell phone and use its light to see when you are in the port-a-john (this is a very helpful hint).

When packing food and drinks there are several things to consider. If you live more than a few hours away you may want to consider buying your food once you make it to Illinois. There is a WalMart Supercenter about 25 minutes from Cornerstone (get directions here) where you can pick up anything you need. You can also buy groceries at the festival grocery store. If you forget anything or just need a few items this is a convienient place to pick up what you need. If you live close to Cornerstone then it may be a little easier to buy your food at home and bring it with you. If you bring your food with you from home you will be glad when you are done setting up camp that you don't have to go shopping. Always remember to keep the perishable foods nice and cold with ice that you should replenish at least once a day. If you live more than a few hours away a good idea is to pack a small cooler with drinks and snacks that you can grab whenever you want without having to stop which will also save you some money. If cooking isn't your thing then don't worry because there are many options in the food court where you can buy every meal if you prefer.

A few other things you may want to have with you include a hammer for driving tent pegs, a lighter for the lanterns and grills, an old blanket to sit on at Main Stage, your camera (or a disposable), a small notebook and a pen to take down information from all the new friends you'll make, a Bible, and most importantly a good attitude and a loving spirit.
